Faroese PM misses chance to meet Trump; US president cancels state visit to Denmark over Greenland sale

US President Donald Trump has cancelled a state visit to Denmark after the nation’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen said Greenland was not for sale to the US.

The president was scheduled to visit on 2 September, at the invitation of Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II.

Then last week Mr Trump suggested the US was interested in buying Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen described the suggestion as “absurd” and said she hoped Mr Trump was not being serious.

However, it appears the American president was indeed serious. He wrote on Twitter: “Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time….”

Mr Trump added: “The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!”

The Faroese prime minister Aksel V Johannesen also intended to meet with Mr Trump in Denmark.

“This is such an important meeting and it is impossible to reject the invitation (to meet the with the US president),” said Mr. Johannesen after it was announced that Donald Trump would pay a visit to Denmark.

The Arctic situation was supposed to be the main topic of the meeting, but Mr. Johannesen aimed to discuss US-Faroese trade relations with the American president as he was hoping for better trade relations with the US.
